neck progress

Nothing really exciting more shape on the neck. But here is a picture of the shaping of the neck. The wood on top is a guide for me to route the fingerboard.

Update, the good the bad and the ugly (yes there is a little ugly)

So with all of the snow that were getting I have today off. This gives me some time to update my bass blog.

Last week I was really stoked to be able to start on the body of my bass. I had all of the parts assembled and was ready to start laminating the top and back to the core. Here are the pieces for the back of the bass:

Here is what the top will resemble:

I got all of the pieces cut, joined, planed and ready to go and started the glueing process:

If you look at the picture you will notice that there aren't clamps on the bottom of the boards. Well when I took the clamps off the walnut had cupped away from the basswood (the core). Alas I'll Have to cut them apart sand down to the walnut, and start again. Oh well.

Here it is with everything laid out kind of like what it will be like when it's glued together (without the shape):

I also got a little work done on the neck shape:

One of the guys at the shop recommended that I should use long strips of sandpaper to help get rid of the rasp marks. I went to home depot and got a belt for a belt style sander and then cut it so that it was one long strip. It worked pretty well. I still have about 2/3 of the neck to go.

I also did a little drawing yesterday of the headstock. Here are a couple of the renderings of the entire shape:

Thanks for stopping by and checking out the progress!

Machine room work

This is a few pictures of our studio rebuild:

We started with a clean slate and all of the cable up through the floor of our "patch rack" This rack allows us to patch any of the lines into either pro tools or our console in 24 channel blocks. Once we pulled all of the cable out of the floor we were ready to start loading the connectors and building the Pro Tools Rack. Thats where we are now. More Neck work

Last night I felt like my project is taking some shape. I got the slot routed for the truss rod and some of the rough width cut out. I also took a shot at some shaping on some pine. I can't wait to get back over there with the walnut and bass wood that I got this week. The photo of the neck with the paper is a headstock shape that I'm thinking about.

wood picts

Sorry for the delay matt!!!

Two weekends ago I was fortunate enough to work with a bunch of friends of mine friday through monday. The bass player made coment that it had been forever since I had updated my blog. He's right. So here is the latest. I had been struggling to find a piece of wood for the top and the back but I have finally found it and when it arrives I will post pictures. It is a piece of marbled walnut. I havn't been feeling well so I havn't made it over to the shop, but I hope to tomorrow.

More news at 11.....

Purchased Parts for neck

I got parts for my neck, check them out. From left to right walnut, the darker piece is wenge and then the piece on top of the wenge is birds eye maple. On the right is a giant chunk of maple.

More design

So things have been moving at a snails pace when it comes to the design of my bass. I realized that I didn't have enough room for the truss rod so I've had to redraw a couple parts of the neck. More on that soon. My wife got me my first hardware for my birthday. I'm the proud owner of a hipshot bridge.

Anyway here is a link to the discussion on the neck issue:

Interesting reading this morning

I wanted to be able to find this again and thought it was worth sharing:

This is from "The Imitation of Christ"

4· That Easy Credence Is Not to be Given to Words

It is not good, truly, to believe every word or impression that comes; they ought to be pondered and considered advisedly and leisurely, so that Almighty God may not be offended through Our fickleness. But alas, for sorrow, we are so frail that we quickly believe evil of others sooner than good. Nevertheless, perfect men are not so ready to give credence, for they well know that the frailty of man is more prone to evil than to good, and that he is very unstable in words. It is great Wisdom, therefore, not to be hasty in Our deeds, not to trust much in Our own wits, not readily to believe every tale, not to show straightway to others all that we hear or believe.

Always take counsel of a wise man, and desire to be instructed and governed by others rather than to follow own ingenuity. A good life makes a man wise toward God and instructs him in many things a sinful man will never feel or know. The more humble a man is in himself and the more obedient he is to God, the more wise and peaceful will he be in everything he will have to do.

More drawing!

I seem to be picking up the CAD program I'm using fairly quickly. The picture above is an overall "3d" render. The one on the left is the top view and the one on the far right is the view of the back.

I did get a little accomplished today. First I got the transition from the neck to the headstock worked out a little smoother. I want to round off the corners on the headstock a little and I need to put the holes for the tuners in, then that end should be very close.
I also made some progress in the transition from the neck to the body. I need to clean that area up as well and then onto more details.

Bass plans

Today has been spent in front of my laptop doing nothing but drawing and unfortunately losing some files (about 4 hours of work that I accomplished yesterday). I have made some head way though. I have a good idea of what my drawings will look like in real life. I still have to work on the transition from the body to the neck and the shape of the headstock. Other details like electronics compartments and pot locations will be coming up soon.

Getting closer I suppose. More to come, hopefully I can start working on the neck blank soon.
